Lume Candele Firenze

Lume is a circular project conceived by Florentine designer Lorenzo Bertini, turning reclaimed wax from Florence’s churches into contemporary sculptural candles.

Each piece is handcrafted in the social workshop Il Candelaio, where craftsmanship becomes a tool for inclusion and social reintegration for people facing vulnerability.

A Simple question

Lume was born from a very simple question:
as a designer, how can I be useful here?

I started thinking about candles when I discovered the extraordinary story of Paolo Coccheri, founder of Ronda della Carità, which the social workshop Il Candelaio is part of.

Every day going to the studio, as I left home and walked past the workshop, I found myself wondering how, through my work as a designer, I could support it — and what, in the world of candles, was still missing that could feel truly distinctive.

A Simple answer

Lume candles are a simple answer to an increasingly clear desire: to choose objects that are not only beautiful, but meaningful too.

They are created for those seeking something different from the conventional candle — a product able to bring together design, craftsmanship, and social and environmental responsibility, not as storytelling, but as a real project.

That is why Lume is not just a candle, but a different way of bringing beauty into spaces: more conscious, more human, more necessary.

Hand-poured. Light rekindled

Every candle is hand-poured, subtly irregular, and carries a story of light being rekindled.

Lume’s formal language, designed by Lorenzo Bertini, draws on Florence’s architectural and artistic heritage – from Renaissance façades and bell towers to traditional wooden turnings – and translates it into luminous objects for private homes, hotels, galleries, architecture studios and contemporary spaces.

On request, all candles can be produced using natural waxes, such as coconut wax.

Why Lume

The name Lume comes from the Florentine word lumi, a traditional term for candles, and carries with it the idea of light in its most essential form. It speaks to Florence, to its language, and to a material culture rooted in everyday rituals and handcrafted objects.

For us, Lume is more than a name: it is a way of connecting design with place, memory, and renewal; transforming wax and light into something contemporary, meaningful, and deeply local.
